Dear Friends!

Let’s celebrate this most festive time of the year! Serai Social Club will take us back to those fabled days of Dickensian England for a singularly memorable Yuletide event.

On Friday the 17th of December, beginning at the hour of seven, travel back in time to that most glorious of Christmas celebrations –
Fezziwig’s Christmas Party!

Inspired by the novel that reinvented the celebration of Christmas they are throwing a Dickensian party straight out of the pages of “A Christmas Carol.”

Fezziwig’s Christmas Party is arguably the most famous celebration of the season in literature and film. The story of Scrooge was a contemporary yarn of trial and redemption, published in 1843. Scrooge is potentially a contemporary of Dickens himself, but the party of Mr. and Mrs. Fezziwig goes back to Scrooges youth. So it puts that part of the tale of Christmas Past at the end of the era of Jane Austin, The Prince Regent, and Merry Old England.

“According to historian Ronald Hutton, the current state of observance of Christmas is largely the result of a mid-Victorian revival of the holiday spearheaded by A Christmas Carol. Hutton argues that Dickens sought to construct Christmas as a family-centered festival of generosity, in contrast to the community-based and church-centered observations, the observance of which had dwindled during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In superimposing his secular vision of the holiday, Dickens influenced many aspects of Christmas that are celebrated today in Western culture, such as family gatherings, seasonal food and drink, dancing, games, and a festive generosity of spirit.” (Wikipedia.org)

So for our entertainment they offer:

- Readings from “A Christmas Carol” by actor Braun McAsh
- A beautiful authentic Christmas buffet with turkey and trimmings!
- A traditional kissing ball hung from the ceiling
- English country dancing with Dance Mistress Marie Disiewicz
- Era appropriate music and theatrical hosts
- Perhaps a Parlour Game or two
- Carolling around the neighbourhood and at the club

Marie Disiewicz, head of Heartland Dance Vancouver, presents Regency English Country Dancing and Scottish Country Dancing workshops and classes in Vancouver, BC and area. Marie received her teaching certificate from the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society in Scotland, 2000. She planned the Grand Ball program for the 2007 Jane Austen Society AGM, and learned even more history of the extraordinary musicians and publishers of dance books that Jane Austen herself might have danced in the Regency era.

Braun McAsh has been a professional actor and fight choreographer since 1976. Best known for being the Swordmaster for Highlander, Mr. McAsh has received many awards for his acting and combat skills. He is also a published author and is currently finishing a book on the artistic process of fight choreography. He was also the co-founder of the Society of Canadian Fight Directors and is currently on the Artistic Advisory Board of the International Order of the Sword and the Pen.

Braun, Marie, and a cast of special guests, including Mr. and Mrs. Fezziwig are invited for this magical evening!

DRESS CODE: Smiling faces! – but if you enjoy dressing up – old fashioned Christmas, Regency/Dickensian, or “A Christmas Carol” character costumes are encouraged, though not required. To give you an idea, this can be as simple as:

Ladies, empire waist, floor length nightie with a scarf or ribbon tied under your bust. Hair in a bun with curls around your face. Long gloves and fans are great. Shawl draped around your shoulders in a ‘V’ at the back. Long skirt and shawl will suffice too.

Gentlemen, dress pants, vest over a white dress shirt, white scarf tied at the neck. Knee-high boots are perfect, but dress shoes will do fine. Wool scarf and a newsie cap works as well!

Watts Costume Rentals has some appropriate costumes for rent if you’re more the “dress to the nines” type of person. (Christmas Carolers outfits or early 1800′s). Reserve outfits with them early. See any Jane Austin film or as follows for more ideas…

The Waterfront skytrain station is 3 min away by foot.
